About the class:
Explore color and texture in this one-day tapestry workshop. Learn how to weave horizontal and vertical stripes, angles, curves, and slit and dovetail tapestry methods. Explore texture and color as you learn the basics of weaving on a frame loom. The frame loom other equipment will be loaned for the day. All materials are included, covered by a $10 material fee (non-refundable) that is included in the fee. Participants may bring favorite fibers.​

NOTE TO PAST STUDENTS: New techniques will be taught to build on what was learned in Beginning Tapestry Weaving class in October 2025 at Contemporary Art Center, such as shading, color transition, the “comb” pattern, rya, twining, and soumak.

Please plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before the start of the class. When you enter the building, look to the left for the passenger elevator. Press 3R. Upon entering the 3rd floor, head towards the bathrooms as the classroom entrance is next to it.

About the Instructor:
While this Rock Island artist and educator employs centuries’ old techniques, her innovation delights fans of weaving. Rowen Schussheim-Anderson has taught at Augustana College, Figge Art Museum, Smithsonian Institution, National Endowment for the Arts’ Artists-in-Education program, Maricopa Community College and Arizona State University where she earned an MFA. Her work is in private collections in the US and abroad. She has exhibited internationally and across the country. Her exhibit, Tapestries of Innovation was exhibited at Contemporary Art Center of Peoria, February 28 – April 11, 2025.
